The City of Plymouth prides itself on its maritime history and even today Plymouth has a significant maritime role in the defences of Great Britain.

Sir Francis Drake was born in Plymouth in 1540 and became the first person to sail around the world. He set sail in 1577 and returned in 1580. Drake is famous for playing bowls on The Hoe at Plymouth in 1588 whilst the Spanish Armada approached - not troubled by this Drake continued his game safe in the knowledge that the sea would turn against the Armada. When the sea did turn the English Fleet sailed from Plymouth Harbour and defeated the Armada by sailing burning ships into them. Even today the statue of Sir Francis Drake stands proudly on Plymouth Hoe looking out to sea and guarding the City.

In 1690, The Mayflower set sail from Plymouth carrying 102 pilgrims looking for religious freedom. It docked in America a few months later and this is where the pilgrims settled. Plymouth is well known in America even today.

During the Second World War (1939 - 1945) extensive bombing devastated the City. The City has now been rebuilt to the splendour it is today with lots of famous name shops and department stores.

Today, Plymouth still serves the Queen with its importance of the Royal Naval Base. Visitors are often delighted by the sight of the Royal Navy's warships sailing across the Plymouth Sound and up and down the River Tamar going on and returning from their peace keeping missions around the globe.
