The beach at Lyme Regis and the six mile stretch of coastline either side is world famous for its fossils. The reason for their abundance at Lyme Regis is due to the type and combination of rocks. 195 million year old clay and limestone belonging to the lower jurassic period topped by younger sandstone rocks give rise to continual landslips releasing hidden fossils onto the beaches.
Lyme Regis is ideal for a walking holiday with a number of places to visit. To the west of the town is the Undercliff Nature Reserve. One of the wildest areas of the coast, accessible only to walkers, the terrain is quite rough but its an ideal opportunity to see rare flora and fauna - there are hundreds of different wild flowers including many species of orchids and ferns. Other walks include a 20 mile stretch along the Heritage Coast footpaths.
Watersports are popular in Lyme Regis, the clear safe water of Lyme Bay is excellent for swimming, sailing, wind surfing or water skiing. Angling is very popular in this resort, you can take a deep sea fishing trip for bass, shark, whiting, huss, cod, conger or skate or a fishing trip around the bay for mackerel. Beach casting and pier fishing are alternatives if you prefer to stay on dry land. If you prefer land based sports, golfing, bowling, pony trekking and cycling are available in Lyme Regis.
The Lyme Regis Marine Aquarium is situated on the end of the famous Cobb, conveniently located by where the fisherman land their catch, an abundant supply of fascinating marine animals which are kept in tanks inside the aquarium building are available.
