Exeter, Devon

The City of Exeter is one of the oldest cities in England. Founded by the Romans, in around AD 50, they built a fortress overlooking the River Exe accommodating around 5,000 people.
 
Today, Exeter is the county town of Devon, comprising of around 600 shops ranging from large department stores to small boutiques, markets and antique shops.
 
There are a number of places to visit in and around Exeter. The Royal Albert Museum displays exhibits on the city's Roman occupation and exhibits on art, antiques and natural history. Exeter Cathedral built in the 12th century offers guided tours from April to October, souvenirs of your visit can be obtained from the Cathedral Shop.
 
Just 5 minutes away from the Cathedral is Exeter's historic quayside. Situated on the River Exe, the Quayside was once a roman waterway then later a 16th century port. Today, the Quayside is a popular riverside resort offering a collection of shops, restaurants and outdoor activities. Canoes and pedalo's are available for hire, alternatively you may wish to take a relaxing riverside walk. The Quay House Visitor Centre is open from April to October showing the history and development of the quayside.
 
There are a number of places offering sports activities in and around Exeter. Riverside Leisure Centre is open all year and facilities include a 25m pool, squash courts, sports hall ideal for netball, basketball and volleyball. There is also a bar and cafe and a function room available for hire. Exeter Arena athletics stadium offers an 8 lane synthetic track, sunbed and sauna. Isca bowls and bridge centre offers indoor bowls, purpose built 28 table bridge suite, licenced bar and restaurant.
 
Exeter is also an ideal base to visit other nearby towns such as the popular resorts of Dawlish Warren, Dawlish and Teignmouth. The popular Torbay resorts of Paignton, Brixham and Torquay, and the North Devon resorts such as Ilfracombe and Woolacombe.
