The village of Axmouth is situated at the entrance of a Combe, with a clear brook flowing down its street. The peace and tranquility of 20th Century Axmouth are sufficient reasons for visiting this picturesque village. Take time to wander around its nooks and crannies. With its 18th and 19th Century farm houses, Norman church, quaint cottages and two fine houses dating from the 15th and 17th centuries.

Axmouth was once a thriving south-coast port of considerable importance, boasting fourteen inns and dates back to the Iron Age. The Roman road, The Fosse Way, terminated at Axmouth. The harbour accounted for one sixth of Devon's trade during the 16th Century, but trading from the harbour has long since ended and it is now the home of the local fishermen and the Axe Yacht Club. The bridge over the river was one of the first concrete bridges to be built in England and the only one still in existence. In 1976 the bridge was designated an 'ancient monument' - the youngest ancient monument in the country.

In Axmouth today you will come across two fine pubs, The Harbour and The Ship Inn. Unusually neither has changed hands in more than 30 years. There is also a village post office, chandlery, filling station, boat builder, dive centre and a variety of accommodation.

At the top of what must be East Devon's steepest tarmac lane you will find Axe Cliff Golf Club and the South West Coastal Path which leads you through The Landslip (a National Nature Reserve and a Proposed World Heritage Site), and on to Lyme Regis.

The estuary at high tide is an excellent spot for most water sports, including windsurfing, canoeing and dinghy sailing, and in Lyme Bay water skiing, yachting and Scuba diving. With its impressive variety of marine and plant life the estuary is a favoured haunt for twitchers.

With its wildlife, walks, history and riverside, Axmouth has an abundance of attractions for tourists & locals alike.
